Glitter, Pasta Necklaces, and Love: The True Meaning of Mother’s Day

Florists, Chocolatiers, and restaurants gear up for the twentyfourhour love-fest known as Mother’s Day. Meanwhile, young children are busy creating cherished heirlooms such as necklaces constructed out of painted dried pasta; photos with hand-decorated cardboard picture frames festooned with lots of sparkles and glitter, and, my personal favorite, gushy “Happy Mother’s Day” cards that get taped to the refrigerator or stashed in the top drawer of my nightstand. 
 
Motherhood is a cornerstone of humanity, responsible for our very existence. “MOTHER” as a verb is defined as “bringing up a child with care and affection.” And, when this happens, what a gift that has positive reverberations in every aspect of our lives. However, the most important longitudinal studies in the field of Positive Psychology show that the presence of one committed, caring adult in a child’s life produces enormous emotional and psychological benefits. 
 
If you’re fortunate enough to have been given a wonderful mamma, or if you are a fabulous mother, grandma, or great grandmother, or if you happen to be an amazing “chosen” mother, role model, and mentor, then take a few moments to celebrate the endearing relationships and moments in your life that make life so precious.
